Thank colleagues for this interdisciplinary, cross-institutional collaboration , only way to progress and mature #uaehealthcare
We embarked upon this study to increase research output among our learners at SSMC.
Historically folks from the region who wished to learn how to do research or pursue academic excellence would go abroad. But the stated vision and mission of the #UAE government is to create a knowledge-based economy and a #AI and #precisionmedicine powerhouse.
UAE government is doing its part by investing monies at levels not seen since the post World War 2 USA government research investments by creating institutes like MBZUAI (Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence), New York University Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates University, Technology Innovation Institute ADIA Lab, etc to name a few
The key to ultimate success is to create a pipeline of elite talent right here in UAE to fully exploit all these opportunities to create growth and value for this ecosystem and in the end the nation
Once we got these preliminary results, esp the lack of awareness of #emergenttechnologies like #aininhealth, #blockchains, #bioinformatics we instituted a series of workshops & lectures to increase awareness among our learners, to connect them to the rich ecosystem that is developing outside the hospitals
We published this in Omnia Health #medicaleducation

#Healthcare in UAE itself has been historically slightly insulated with this rapid transformation. But with the full-scale meltdown of NHS and the culture wars in #USA, I am seeing more and more elite folks in their prime age group coming to UAE due to its welcoming environment and great opportunities
This puts additional pressure on our #learners to acquire skills that will allow them to compete with this elite talent which is flocking to UAE.
So are we preparing our learners for #futureofwork and #futureofhealthcare ?
Historically doctors had a recession-proof job, as long as you kept your nose clean & in the case of #nephrology- put 20-30 dialysis prescriptions a day you had a job till you retired or died.
But most of what we do can be automated or done by someone else for less pay, when the #healthcaresystem matures, the question will be asked what value are you bringing to the institution
Our study has a lot of food for thought.
